Melons
Available from the Fruit and Vegetables Counter by Charles Attard at Arkadia Foodstore Gozo
Melons are a diverse group of fruits known for their sweet and refreshing qualities. Popular varieties include watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, each offering unique flavours and textures. Watermelons are large, with a green rind and juicy red or yellow flesh, ideal for hydrating in hot weather. Cantaloupes have rough, netted skin and sweet orange flesh, rich in vitamins A and C. Honeydew melons possess smooth, pale green skin with succulent, sweet green or white flesh. Cultivated in warm climates worldwide, melons thrive in sandy, well-drained soils. Nutritionally, they are low in calories but high in water content, making them excellent for hydration. They also provide essential nutrients like vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre. Often consumed fresh, in salads, or as desserts, melons are celebrated for their delightful taste and health benefits, making them a summer staple.

Pairing Melons
Pairing melons with complementary flavours can enhance their natural sweetness and refreshment. For a savoury twist, combine melons with prosciutto, feta cheese, or a balsamic glaze, creating a delightful contrast. Fresh herbs like mint, basil, and cilantro add aromatic complexity. Citrus fruits such as lime or lemon juice amplify the melon's brightness.
For a sweet combination, mix melons with berries, grapes, or tropical fruits like pineapple. Yoghurt or honey drizzles can also enhance the melon's flavour. Whether in salads, appetisers, or desserts, these pairings make melons a versatile and delicious component of any dish.
