Pears

Background

Pears are one of the world's most beloved fruits, cherished for their sweet flavour, juicy texture, and gentle aroma. Originating from regions of Europe and Asia, pears belong to the genus Pyrus, within the family Rosaceae. They come in over 3000 varieties, each with distinct characteristics. Common types include Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, and Comice, varying in colour from green and yellow to red.

Nutritionally, pears are a powerhouse. They're a good source of essential antioxidants, dietary fibre, and vitamin C, contributing to digestive health, reducing inflammation, and boosting immune function. Low in calories and fat-free, they make a healthful snack that fits into various dietary needs.

Culturally, pears hold significant value in many traditions and cuisines. They can be enjoyed fresh, baked, poached, or grilled, making them versatile in both savoury and sweet dishes. Pears are also used in making cider and even vinegar, showcasing their culinary flexibility and appeal across different palates and preferences.

Pear Upside-down Cake

Recipe: Caramelised Pear Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients:

For the caramelised pears:

  • 3-4 medium pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

For the cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

A wide variety of quality ingredients for our recipes are available from Arkadia supermarkets in Malta and Gozo, including Arkadia FoodExpress Swatar and Arkadia Food Market Valletta.

Method:

1. Preheat your oven to 175°C.

2. In a 10-inch ovenproof skillet or cake pan, melt the stick of butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved.

3. Arrange the pear slices in the pan in a single layer or in a circular pattern. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the pears are slightly softened, and the caramel is bubbling. Remove from heat and set aside.

4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

5. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, starting, and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

7. Carefully pour the cake batter over the caramelised pears in the skillet, spreading evenly.

8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

9. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, place a large plate over the skillet and carefully flip the cake onto the plate, so the pears are on top.

10. Serve warm or at room temperature, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
