Easter in Malta
Easter in Malta is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in religious traditions and local customs. The week leading up to Easter, known as Holy Week, is marked by solemn processions, re-enactments of biblical events, and fervent prayers. One of the most notable events is the Good Friday procession, where statues depicting the Passion of Christ are paraded through the streets amidst a sombre atmosphere.
Maltese churches are adorned with intricate decorations, and the faithful participate in religious rituals, reflecting the island's strong Catholic identity. Traditional Maltese sweets, such as figolli (almond pastry) and kwareżimal (Lenten sweet), are enjoyed during this festive time. Families often gather for a special Easter Sunday lunch, featuring lamb dishes, a symbol of sacrifice and renewal. Beyond its religious significance, Easter in Malta is a time for communities to come together, blending faith, culture, and shared joy.
