Pinot Grigio

Wine Pairing

Learn About Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is the kind of wine best enjoyed on warm summer days, with its zesty and refreshing taste. The dry white wine is characterised by lemon, lime, green apple, and honeysuckle flavours and is best served cold. Like many other wine grapes, Pinot Grigio originated in France but soon made its way to Switzerland and Northern Italy where it established its success.  Have a look at the three main types of the wine and its ideal food pairings.

Minerally and Dry

This is the leanest style of Pinot Grigio growing through Italy, Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary. It is best paired with mussels, crispy French fries, salads, and other simple dishes accompanied by citrus flavours.

Fruity and Dry

A fruitier variation of the wine oozes flavours of lemon, yellow apples, and white peaches with a richer and slightly more oily texture. This style of Pinot Grigio is also less acidic, a characteristic attributable to the Malolactic Fermentation process it undertakes.

Fruity and Sweet

The famous sweet variation of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, comes from Alsace, France. Its flavours of lemon candy, honeycomb and honey apples are the result of late harvesting and rotting grapes to maximise the flavour intensity.

Food Pairings

Being so light and delicate, Pinot Grigio may be enjoyed both as a starter or as a complement to the main dish. For main course, the wine is best paired with fresh, summery dishes including seafood, risotto, light pasta dishes and chicken. Steer away from heavy creams and sauces. Including vegetables to the meal is also a perfect combination to the wine’s neutral tones. If you’re thinking cheeses, avoid the pungent ones like cheddar or stilton so not to overpower the delicacy of the wine. Instead, go for milder and softer cheese like brie and mozzarella.
