Breads of the World
Lavash, Armenia
Lavash, a traditional Armenian flatbread, holds a significant place in Armenian cuisine and culture. This unleavened bread is crafted from three simple ingredients, flour, water, and salt, then rolled thin and baked to perfection. Its preparation involves a communal effort, often turning into a festive occasion. The bread's versatility allows it to accompany various dishes, from kebabs to cheeses. Lavash is more than a culinary delight; it symbolizes unity and heritage, as UNESCO recognized it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its thin, crisp texture and wholesome flavour make lavash not just a staple food but a cherished part of Armenian identity.
