Pink October

Educate, Raise Awareness, Prevent

Pink October Ribbon

In a global effort to raise awareness on breast cancer, the month of October was designated to be the ‘Pink Month’ in which education and awareness is spread and prevention is encouraged. During this month, we also honour the memory of all the lives lost to breast cancer and cheer on the fighters and survivors.

Early identification of symptoms is crucial in preventing the spread of breast cancer and increasing the chance of recovery. Symptoms to look out for include but are not limited to:

  • Lumps in the breasts or underarms.
  • Swelling of the breasts.
  • Breast skin irritation.
  • Persistent breast pain.
  • Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin.
  • Nipple discharge (excluding breast milk).
  • Any change in the size or shape of the breast.

The good news is that breast cancer patients usually have a relatively high chance of survival and successful treatment, even more so if symptoms are identified at an early stage, so do not be afraid to consult with your doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms. It could be lifesaving!

In Malta, breast screening is currently offered to all women between the ages of fifty and sixty-nine, to be undertaken every two and a half years. The screening procedure is nothing to be afraid of. It involves a mammogram, which takes an X-ray of the breasts, involving compression of the breasts for a few seconds. The benefit of a mammogram is that it can detect minor changes in breast tissue which would not be identifiable by the woman herself or by a doctor.

How to prevent breast cancer:

  • Maintain a healthy weight by balancing your food intake with physical activity.
  • Conduct regular physical exercise.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Attend your breast screening appointments if you are eligible.

Food to include in your meals to prevent breast cancer:

  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Citrus fruits
  • Fatty fish
  • Berries
  • Garlic
  • Yogurt
  • Peaches, apples, and pears
  • Beans
  • Herbs and spices

Throughout Pink October, you can show your support by wearing pink, attending fundraising events, spreading awareness, and lending a shoulder of support to anyone you might know who is battling breast cancer.
