Wine Pairing

A Profile of Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc grape originates from Loire Valley in France and is internationally celebrated on 3rd May. Its name is derived from the French word ‘sauvage’, meaning wild as the grape grew wildly across the Valley and the Bordeaux region. The white wine is sought for its herbal flavours and high acidity in a light bodied taste.  However, the grape grows in countries all over the world, thus providing variations of style from lean to bountiful. For the ideal pairing, one should match the wine’s weight and strength of flavour with that of the food.

Food Pairings

Meat and Seafood

Light wines are paired with light foods. For meats, chicken, turkey, and pork are suggested to be paired with an oaked glass, while for seafood, crab, salmon, and calamari are a prime choice. You can also serve a plate of shellfish with clams, lobster, prawns, scallops and the lot. For a more exquisite treat, oysters with mignonette are also paired deliciously with the wine.

Pasta

Pasta can go very well with various styles of Sauvignon Blanc wine. For instance, if you're serving an oaked style, pair it with a creamy pasta dish or risotto. Citrus-infused and herbaceous variations, on the other hand, are recommended for a plate of pesto pasta, the classic ravioli with tomato sauce, or a simpler pasta dish.

Cheese

If you’re planning a charcuterie board to serve with your Sauvignon Blanc, soft cheeses full of flavour are a must. Options include goat cheese, feta, and parmesan. If you’re having a quick salad for brunch, pair your afternoon glass with some mozzarella di bufala or a ricotta salata.

Vegetables

Green vegetables are paired well with the commonly referred to as ‘green wine’, getting its nickname from its herbal flavours. Sauvignon Blanc may be complemented with side dishes of fried zucchini, asparagus, green peas or even artichokes.

Asian

The herbal flavours in Sauvignon Blanc are also paired with Asian cuisines rich in herbs and spices such as Thai or Vietnamese dishes. It especially thrives with mint, dill, cilantro, rosemary, and thyme, amongst others. If you're opting for a spicy dish, it is recommended to pair it with an acidic cool-climate style of the wine.
