Sea Bream

Sea bream, a popular and delectable fish, holds a special place in culinary traditions worldwide. Belonging to the Sparidae family, it encompasses several species.

These fish are prized for their mild, sweet flavour and firm, white flesh, making them a favourite in various cuisines. Their versatility in the kitchen allows for grilling, baking, steaming, or even raw consumption as sashimi. In Mediterranean cuisine, sea bream is often prepared with herbs, olive oil, and lemon, enhancing its natural taste.

Sea bream is not just a delight for the palate but also a nutritious choice, rich in lean protein, essential omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins like B12, and minerals such as selenium.

Recipe: Grilled Sea Bream with Lemon and Herbs

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 whole sea breams, cleaned and scaled
  • 2 lemons, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

A wide variety of quality ingredients for our recipes are available from Arkadia supermarkets in Malta and Gozo, including Arkadia FoodExpress Swatar and Arkadia Food Market Valletta.

Method:

1. Preheat your grill on medium-high heat. If you're using charcoal, let the coals become white-hot.

2. Prepare the fish by rinsing under cold water, both inside and out. Pat them dry with paper towels. Score the skin on both sides of each fish with diagonal cuts, about 1 inch apart.

3. Season the sea bream inside and out with salt and black pepper. Stuff the cavity of each fish with lemon slices, minced garlic, and a few sprigs of fresh thyme.

4. Brush the outside of each fish with extra-virgin olive oil to prevent sticking to the grill grates.

5. Place the sea bream on the preheated grill. Grill for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until the skin is crispy and the flesh is opaque and flakes easily. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size of the fish.

6. While grilling, brush the fish with more olive oil and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley.

7. Carefully transfer the grilled sea bream to a serving platter. Garnish with extra lemon slices and fresh herbs. Serve hot and enjoy!
